Sojourn on the remote east coast of El Salvador tests traveler’s boundaries
ISLA DE MEANGUERA, El Salvador – All my life, I have believed it’s simply stupid to find yourself in a situation that feels unsafe or uncomfortable. It reflects poor planning. It means you weren’t thinking ahead or weren’t thinking at all.
So it was a real surprise, this summer, to find myself embarking on a 10-day trip to the undeveloped coast of El Salvador a place that pretty much embodies the words “unsafe” and “uncomfortable.”
A photographer and I planned to explore the remote fishing villages of eastern El Salvador. In the rainy season. Carrying nothing but backpacks. Swatting mosquitoes. Sleeping in hammocks. Eating the local food. Drinking no water.
